Description
Samuel Wells (1801-1868), a native of New Hampshire, served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Maine from 1847-1854. He then served as Maine's 25th governor from 1856-1857.
Wells, a Democrat, lived in Portland.
During his time as governor, the 1851 prohibition law was repealed, replaced by a bill that restricted the number of liquor sales in each municipality.
Ulysses Dow Tenney (1826-1904) painted this portrait after Wells' death. Tenney, a native of New Hampshire, was a well-known portrait painter.
