Description
Asa Clapp (1762-1848) was Portland's wealthiest landowner in the early 1800s. He made his fortune as a shipowner, in banking, and in real estate. He and Matthew Cobb operated a large ropewalk near Congress and St. John streets.
During the War of 1812, Clapp invested half of his fortune in government securities to help subsidize the war effort as well as running many privateers through the British blockades.
Artist Thomas Badger (1792-1868) lived in Boston but often worked out of Kennebunk. Badger painted portraits of most of the Clapp family as well as Bowdoin faculty and Kennebunk citizens.
