Description
Nathaniel Sherburne Rogers (1805-1848) of Mount Vernon served as captain of the Grecian and the Moscow.
In 1834 Rogers was awarded a gold medal from King Louis Philipe of France for "Noble and Courageous Action." The French brig L'Esperance was in danger from a storm with the risk to all the crew. Rogers' ship Grecian was nearby, and Rogers crewed the small boat dispatched to rescue all of the shipwrecked crew.
Soon after the L'Esperance</vm>disappeared beneath the waves.
