Description
Glass plate photograph of the Bangor-Brewer wooden covered bridge looking northwesterly from Brewer up the Penobscot River and toward Bangor. The foreground buildings are in Brewer. The steeple in the background is that of Saint John's Catholic Church on York Street in Bangor. This was the only bridge between Bangor and Brewer at this time. It was built in 1847 following the destruction of a previous covered bridge which was destroyed in the Flood of 1846. This photo predates the March 20, 1902 flood which knocked out the middle span of the bridge. After the 1902 the bridge was repaired, and it was eventually replaced with an iron bridge in 1912.
