Description

This is looking easterly down Broad Street during the Bangor Flood of March 20, 1902. There are a number of unidentified men in three canoes as well a number of unidentified onlookers. Note that there is an African American man with a paddle in the rear of the canoe furthest to the left.

There was a fairly small African American population in Bangor at this time, but they were known as being very hard-working and from proud families and were readily accepted. Ice and log jams on the Penobscot River caused the river to back-up and flood sections of the downtown business district. It was essentially a one-day event.
