Description

The steam ferry Lubec was only a year old when this photo was taken on April 16, 1892. Plying the waters of Penobscot Bay to serve Lubec, North Lubec, Eastport, and Welshpool on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, she was 69.5 feet long, 18 feet abeam, and drew 6.3 feet of water. According to an 1893 promotional booklet quoted in the Lubec Historical Society’s book “200 Years of Lubec History 1776-1976,” “The boat is heated by steam, lighted by electricity, is very handsomely furnished and decorated throughout (especially the ladies’ cabin). She will accommodate 350 passengers.” According to the article “Notes on the Maritime History of Lubec” by Frank P. Adams, Sr., she was bult in Portland by J. H. Dyer, length 69.5 feet, beam 18 feet, tonnage 51, drawing 6.3 feet of water. In addition to the top pennant, the vessel bears its name under the windows of the wheelhouse. The lower pennant, “U.S.M,” remains unidentified. In 1938 with horsepower increased to 100, she was owned by John R. Brown of Bangor and used for towing service until 1942 when she disappeared from records.
