Description
In 1882 the Passamaquoddy Ferry Company was formed by Julius Wolff, a pioneer of the sardine industry, and Bion M. Pike, long time sardine mogul and businessman of Lubec who later became sole owner of the company. Initially using sailing vessels, the ferry service among Lubec, North Lubec, Eastport, and Welshpool on Campobello Island used steamships exclusively by the 1890s. The first of the then-modern ships was the "Lubec," followed by the "Eastport" (shown here) and the "Campobello." The “Eastport” was built in Dennysville Maine by Lyman Pushee in 1901, length 76 feet, beam 19.5 feet, 64 tons. According to the article “Notes on the Maritime History of Lubec” by Frank P. Adams, Sr., she was abandoned in 1939.
