Description

This daguerreotype of an unidentified man dressed in formal clothes was made about 1850 by George M. Howe.

Howe was a popular Portland daguerreotypist with rooms on Middle Street from 1851 to 1860. The Eclectic, a Portland literary paper, suggested in 1851 that "those who want an excellent daguerreotype picture can procure it at Howe's. His miniatures are not surpassed in fidelity and style by those of any artist in the country."
