Description
This faded photo shows the "Staple Block" building at the extreme northeastern end of end of Lubec’s Water Street, built in 1897 according to an article in the Lubec Herald, February 18, 1937. The name “Staples” is on the top of the facade, and a sign for the Lubec Herald newspaper office is on the porch floor just left of the stair. A Post Office sign appears below the row of spectators, and a smaller version at the top of the awning over the stair. For a substantial period of time U.S. Customs occupied the left office because of proximity to steamship, ferry, and later auto ferry wharves. The building also housed Seaboard Packing Co. offices and later became the first home of the Regional Medical Center Lubec.
