Cutting Sand at Saco-Lowell Shops, ca. 1950

Contributed by McArthur Public Library

Description

Cutting sand at the Saco-Lowell Shops in Biddeford. The man at the back is Albert Ledoux, and the man in front is unknown. The men are working cutting sand for the Saco Lowell Shop.

Sand cutting is the process in which used molding sand from foundries is cut and screened to remove impurities so it can be reused. This is probably why the sand pile is steaming and the man in front wears no shirt.
