Description
A cartoon entitled "The Cure" and subtitled "the way we do it a Hebron Maine" represents the "fresh air" approach favored for tuberculosis treatment at the Maine State Sanatorium in Hebron.
Patients slept outside on porches year-round and were required to spend much of their day outdoors as well. The staff kept close track of their temperature and weight. They also ate diets rich in eggs and milk.
H.M. Lord drew the cartoon at Saranac Lake, N.Y., where Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau went to treat his own tuberculosis and, in 1884, founded the Adirondack Cottage Sanatorium for TB treatment.
