Demolition of Historic House, Lubec, 1977

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

This house faced Pleasant Street in Lubec village, near the corner with Summer Street. Lubec native T. G. Mitchell established a general store on Water Street in 1893 after 10 years as owner and captain of a sailing vessel. According to "Illustrated Souvenir 1908," he also bottled Porcupine Mineral Water and Cascade Ginger Ale here. The Mitchell family bought this house from John McGregor in 1833, who is believed to have acquired it from Lewis or Louis F. Delesdenier. French Hugenot Delesdenier was one of the most illustrious early residents of North Lubec, and served as Customs Collector of the Port of Passamaquoddy. Later he became one of the first settlers in what become Lubec village where he built this house. For earlier views of this house see #28050 and #28053.
