Description

Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce to tell her that Henry Houghton had the letters Anne Pierce and the Maine Historical Society sought and that he was on his way to the U.S. with them.

The letters were from British citizens who were recruited as part of the Longfellow Memorial Committee to raise money and write in support of a bust of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1801-1882) in Poet's Corner at Westminster Abbey in London.

Pierce suggested she insure that Longfellow's children and other family members agreed with the effort to have the letters reside in Portland. Houghton was given the letters for "safe-keeping" only.

Pierce, a native of Gorham who lived in London, was helping his aunt with contacts in London to secure the letters for the Historical Society.
