Description

Ruth Pierce Crocker (1794-1879) of Portland wrote to her sister Hannah and niece Phebe Sanborn in Baldwin about the Great Portland Fire of 1866.

Crocker, a widow, noted that her home (44 Brackett Street) was spared, but commented on the numbers of businesses, banks, churches, and homes destroyed and the efforts to provide relief for the victims of the fire.
