Description
Josiah Pierce (1824-1913) wrote from London to his aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce of Portland about his long absence from the U.S. and his feelings of distance from many of his old friends.
Pierce went to Russia in 1955 as secretary to the U.S. Legation in St. Petersburg. Except for short returns to Maine, he remained in Russia and England as the lawyer for a company engaged in railroad management.
He told his aunt that he was pleased to know that "your feelings remain the same towards me." He was concerned that other former friends might not welcome him.
Pierce and his first wife had been separated for a number of years before she died in 1873. He remarried in 1877.
