Request for pay for recruiting sailors, Portland, 1861

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

J.M. and C.R. Knapp wrote to Col. George F. Shepley of the 12th Maine Regiment seeking pay for recruiting sailors for him.

They wrote that Capt. Thompson had left Portland without paying them "one cent." They wanted, as per their agreement, $2 for each of the 25 or 30 men they recruited.

However, they noted that other officers had offered them $3 per head and "cash down when they enlisted."
