Description
Capt. John Curtis (1823-1870) wrote to his wife, Letitia Bammer Curtis of Brunswick, on Jan. 11, 1861 from Mobile, Alabama. The state seceded from the union that day.
Curtis often carried cotton from Mobile to Liverpool.
He commented on the near certainty of war, even though he expressed hope for a settlement between the Northern and Southern states.
He wrote, "It is awfull to see americans armed against americans and ready to shed the last drop of blood to defend there homes and fireside.
