Description

Maurice Rumford Pierce (1887-1968) and his wife, Cecilia, at Pierce Place in Baldwin.

Pierce was born in Portland, the son of Lewis and Mary Bellows Pierce. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and served in both World War I and II.

He was commander of the USS Los Angeles when it was commissioned in 1932.

He also invented a camera sextant to aid in aerial navigation.
