Description
The First Parish Meetinghouse was built in 1759 and its location on Pool Road was the cause of the separation of Biddeford and Saco. It was a center of political and religious life in Biddeford from 1759 to the 1830s. Remodeled and rededicated September 2, 1840 it is the oldest public building in Biddeford.
Historical events on this site include the town answering the call of the Committee of Correspondence to abstain from importing British goods, the Committee of Public Safety forming to obtain powder and flints for the protection of the Town, the Declaration of Independence read to the people of Biddeford and entered into the Town record as a memorial of the event on July 17, 1776. Also, a rally of 400 members of the Youth Temperance Society met here July 5, 1841 and formed the Town Temperance Society. They donated $200.00 to the repair of the Meetinghouse.
