Letter to Persis Blanchard on youth, friends, Michigan, 1855

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Lucy Perry Collins of Clay Banks, Michigan, wrote to her friend, Persis Blanchard of Cumberland, commenting on how much she missed her school friends in Maine.

Lucy (Lucinda Ellen) moved with her family to Michigan three years earlier and was now married. "Would that the days of childhood and youth have lasted longer, though I am happy as happy can be," she wrote.

Collins and her husband, a millwright, were living with the Perry family and considering when to set up housekeeping for themselves. Lucy's father, Oliver C. Perry, had just bought a 240-acre farm in Clay Banks, Oceana County, Michigan.
