Description

A large contingent of U.S. Coast Guard personnel at attention in North Lubec. Note Coast Guard vessel in the background, accompanying the "Eagle" a full-rigged ship which is on hand to transport the body of Hopley Yeaton from his resting place in Lubec to the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut. Here is a first hand accoiunt:
“As a Swab (4th class cadet), I sailed with the crew of the USCG Eagle (WIX-327) from Portland to Lubec, Maine, the third week of August 1975. Although the purpose of the trip was sail training, our mission was to retrieve the remains of Capt. Hopley Yeaton, the first officer commissioned for the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service. The Eagle sailed into Lubec harbor on August 19, 1975, and anchored overnight. The next day a USCG 82-foot patrol boat transferred the flag-draped casket to Eagle where it was received with full military honors, including side boys. The casket was secured in the waist of the ship and arrived a few days later at City Dock in New London. From there the casket with Capt. Yeaton’s remains was transferred to the Academy, again with full military honors." Written by John Russell, LCDR, (Retired) US Coast Guard Academy Class of 1979, on August 19,2013, at West Quoddy Head Light, “38 years ago today we arrived in Lubec.”
