Hopley Yeaton disinterment, Lubec, 1974

Description

Determining that The Father of the Coast Guard should be buried at the Academy in New London, Connecticut, the Coast Guard exhumed the body of Hopley Yeaton (1739-May 14, 1812) from the grave at his farm in North Lubec on November 1, 1974. This photograph shows the breaking of ground. The older gentleman in the background with hat and suitcoat was Lloyd E. Leighton, who was the local funeral director for the past 54 years at that time, and the man with the pickaxe is Carleton (Bo) Leighton his youngest son, with Lloyd (John) Leighton,Jr. his eldest son behind him.
