Jewett self-heating can patent, 1903

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

George Sidney Jewett of Norridgewock received Patent # 720,434 for his self-heating can for canned goods. The patent was issued Feb. 10, 1903.

The can has an inner and an outer chamber. The vegetables or fruits go in the inner chamber. The outer chamber is filled with unslacked lime or other material that heats when brought into contact with water. An upper chamber of the can is filled with water.

The user can heat the contents of the can by striking a punch on the can, then removing it, which allows water to enter the lime chamber and heat the contents of the can.
