Description
The Classical & Scientific Academy was located on the corner of Central and Warren Streets. It was a boarding and day school affiliated with the Congregational denomination in Maine. The school was open to both sexes and secondary level Hallowell students attended the day school because the city did not have a high school.
The John Otis House occupied the site before the Academy was built in the mid-1870s. The site remained dormant from 1888 until Hallowell High School was constructed in 1920. The high school building was razed in the early 1990s and a private residence was built.
