Aerial view, Lubec, 1962, ca. 1962

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

The new Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial Bridge lies in the center of this photograph, connecting Campobello Island on the left with Lubec village on the right. No customs facility exists, not even the trailer which soon served as its temporary quarters, suggesting that this photo was taken shortly after the bridge opened on August 13, 1962. Note that trees remain leafed. Water Street predominates, with the stone breakwater prominent its the lower end. The tide is unusually low. The American Can Company is visible at the extreme right, near the water tower. Looking out Lubec Channel, West Quoddy head projects to the left, and in the far distance the hazy Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick. Lubec Channel Lighthouse is in the distance.
This photograph is attributed to Carroll Peacock, a lifelong flyer, by his grandson, Robert J. Peacock II.
