Shaw & Clark Sewing Machine advertisement, Biddeford, 1866

Description

Full-page advertisement which appeared in the Biddeford-Saco City Directory in 1866 for the Shaw & Clark Sewing Machine Company of Biddeford. The company was owned by Biddeford's then mayor, Charles Shaw, and his partner James Clark. They sold sewing machines by mail-order, many to people living in the western frontiers of the United States. The manufacturer was located off of Main Street, Biddeford, in the building that would eventually the Allen Loom Picker building.
