Description
Dating from around 1855, the William Arnold House was the first house built on West Broadway, and was the only house in Bangor styled after Italianate villas. The design was based on a plan published by A.J. Downing, probably adapted by Bangor architect Benjamin S. Deane. Although Arnold was well-off, he seems to have sunk most of his funds into the house, and it was sold in 1857. Arnold made a profit on the sale, but the unconventional design of the house suggests that he had probably intended to reside there himself, and not in the more modest residence on Fourth Street. Arnold did well in life, but died with the moderate estate of $19,000.
Around 1890 a Queen Anne tower and Italianate veranda were added, and circa 1910 a Colonial Revival wrap-arond porch replaced the front steps, but the house still stands.
