Description
A stereo card of the Maine Central wreck of August 9, 1871, known as the Tin Bridge wreck. The wreck of the bridge highlighted the dangers faced by an influx of travelers taking advantage of cheap, fast transport. Trains were running faster, heavier, and more frequently over older bridges designed for lighter loads and not always kept in repair. The MCRR’s inquest points to the importance attached to safe railroads.
