Description

In a letter to his parents, Josiah and Evelina Lewis Pierce in Gorham, Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) comments that now that the ice is out on the Neva River in St. Petersburg, Russia, much of his time is spent with American visitors to the city.

Pierce, serving as secretary to the American Legation in Russia, noted that several Maine ships had stopped -- the Corinthian from Portland, with Captain Slater; and the John L. Dimock of Brunswick with Captain Skolfield.

He also wrote about accompanying a "very estimable country woman of ours, Miss Dix of New York." Dorothea Dix was in Russia after "visiting the hospitals & prisons of almost all the rest of Europe."
