Description

Writing from St. Petersburg, Russia, where he was secretary to the American Legation, Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his parents in Gorham about the great military parade and other May Day festivities.

He comments on the crowd, the military, and the ruling family.

Pierce was an 1849 graduate of Bowdoin College and a lawyer in Portland before taking the diplomatic post.
