Description

Charles Lawrence was born in Gray in 1845 to Nathaniel Sawtelle Lawrence and Mary Ann Harris Lawrence. The fifth of six children, he was the youngest of three boys. He served in the Army at the end of the Civil War and although his service record has not been found, he wrote letters home from the Headquarters of the Army of the South in July, 1865. Charles drowned in the Royal River while skating on December 4, 1868. His death was noted by his future sister-in-law, Ellen Marston, in her diary. At the time of his death he lived at the home of his parents on Lawrence Road in Pownal.
