Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lubec, ca. 1940, ca. 1940

Description

A 24-page booklet self-published by this church in 1987 says, "A small church was built in 1898 at the top of Main Street to serve about twenty families...Throughout this time, Trescott, West Lubec and Lubec remained as a mission parish of Machias.

"In 1913 the mission was assumed by Eastport. At this time, it was decided to make Trescott, West Lubec and Lubec into a parish. The Rev. Joseph Sullivan began gathering funds for this purpose. The Robert Kelley estate of Church St. was purchased for a rectory...By 1924, the little church on top of the hill was too small, initiating fund-raising. The Depression slowed progress. Ground was broken for the present church in the spring of 1937. First Mass was celebrated Nov. 7, 1937.”
The image here appears to be an amateur or local photographer’s postcard, probably a contact print from a 116 or 616 roll film size negative onto the postcard format printing paper then popular, and bears a striking physical resemblance to a ca. 1930 used postcard of Lubec’s Congregational Church. Thus the date here, ca. 1930.
