Description

Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), a graduate of Bowdoin College and lawyer in Portland, wrote to his parents in Gorham to tell them he was accepting a diplomatic appointment.

He wrote that he would miss his family and would return any time they needed his assistance.

He also noted, "...the opportunity for additional culture, for enlarged and desirable experience, for a higher position among men, coming in this shape, with the advantages and pleasures of travel is too attractive fo me to be resisted."

He served in St. Petersburg, Russia.
