Description
In a letter to his father, Josiah Pierce of Portland mentions a deal concerning Bounty Lands, and his thoughts of leaving Portland and going somewhere else, pershaps Damariscotta, perhaps in the South.
Pierce (1827-1913), a lawyer, wrote, "I am sorely tempted to give up my prospects of a hard-working-and not very distinguished life here, where the highest reputation in law and politics and the largest fortune and influence is moderate, and run away to one of the cotton-raising states ..."
He dated the letter 1850, but it was written the first day of 1851.
