Description

Upper Water Street view around 1965 in Lubec. The farthest right building, earlier the Mowry building, bears the sign, “Lubec Grain & Supply.” This is the only building shown which still exists as of 2010. The middle building housed the Pikes building (built in 1902 according to an article in the Lubec Herald for February 18, 1937) with a store run by Tom and later Harold Pike, then the Staples Store (built in 1897 according to an an article in the Lubec Herald for February 18, 1937). A sign on the farthest left building reads “Trident Packing Co. Office.” This was a Pike brand of sardines, "Trident" representing the three brothers Sumner, Alger and Moses. In earlier times this building housed the Customs Office (because of its proximity to the ferry wharf) and the Medical Center. Another view of these buildings, from 1911, may be Upper Water Street view around 1965 in Lubec.
