Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his father, Josiah Pierce of Gorham, about his activities at Bowdoin College, where he was a freshman.
He commented that mesmerism was the rage on campus and that a woman, Miss Allen, was lecturing about it.
He wrote, "It seems very great to think of a woman lecturing and performing operations before so many men."
Pierce dated the letter 1842, but it was written in 1843.
