Description
A student at Bowdoin College, Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his father in Gorham, mentioning that he had not yet seen the comet, but had heard much talk about it.
He noted that Prof. Cleaveland said it was not a comet, but Venus passing over the sun.
Pierce commented, "I suppose it will convert a good many to Millerism."
Millerites predicted Christ's return to earth, with much speculation that the event would happen in the spring of 1843.
