Description
The Tarbell general store is at the right on Main Street in Smyrna Mills.
At left are the livery stable and Cooper House Hotel.
Nehemiah Leavitt, a land surveyor, laid out the town of Smyrna Mills. When the town was incorporated in 1839, he wanted to name it Royalton. He had sold his claims to the land and reportedly was upset with the sale and changed the name to Smyrna after Smyrna, Turkey, a city known for its sins. It was a farming and lumbering town.
