Contributed by Hubbard Free Library

Description

The 1896 spring flooding of the Kennebec River in Hallowell was well documented in photographs. This view looking south down Water Street shows the river beginning to recede but still isolating part of the downtown. The tracks in the street are for the electric car line of the Augusta, Hallowell and Gardiner Railroad which was built in 1890. A dog, horse and buggies, and people are also shown in the photograph.
