Description

Daniel Elliot was born in Bowdoin on July 31, 1818. Daniel married Dolly W. _____ about 1856 and she died about 1864 leaving four children with Mr. Elliot. He married Sarah M. Weston about 1874 and they had a set of twin boys. Daniel died November 13, 1889 and was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Brunswick.

At 18 Daniel walked from Hartland to Bowdoinham to try his hand at being a sailor on his uncle's ship but when he got there his uncle had already left port. So he went to Portland and found a job for one year working in a common country store. After that, he worked as a clerk in a dry goods store for two years when his employer sent him to Brunswick to open a second store. Daniel's employer told him to buy goods on his (Daniel's) account so he severed connections with Portland and opened a store in the Day's Block in Brunswick in 1839. Daniel did business in Brunswick for nearly forty years. In 1883, Mr. Elliot finally gave up the business and had his oldest son, E.C., take it over after forty-four years of being a merchant in the Town of Brunswick.

Mr. Elliot was very involved in all Town affairs. The very last celebration of the 4th of July in Brunswick was largely the work of his own hands. He was very involved in getting a new Town Hall built. In 1883 Mr. Elliot packed the time capsule box that contained memorabilia about Brunswick at the time the Town Hall was built. In 1961 the box was opened after the Town Hall was demolished.

Daniel was a public spririted citizen. He served on the Senate of Maine during the winter of 1863 to 1864. He also served on the School Board for Brunswick for three or four years.

Mr. Elliot had been an invalid for years and confined to his house. His last outing was a drive on his 70th Birthday.
