Water Street, Lubec, ca. 1950

Contributed by Lubec Historical Society

Description

Downtown Lubec, looking southeast on Water Street. On left, the closest two-story structure (between the two utility poles) was the Morshee Superette. In earlier decades the building housed the Herb May Blacksmith Shop. Next (just beyond the second pole) the Western Auto Store, the alleyway to the McCurdy Smoked Herring Stand, then the Lubec Herald newspaper building. A clock was mounted between two windows. Next, the C. M. Mulholland Store, as of 2009 home of Lubec Landmarks/office of “Historic McCurdy Smokehouse,” an educational site. Continuing, the Dodge Grocery Store, as of 2010 the Atlantic House deli and coffee shop, then the Dodge Departtment Store, vacant but still standing as of 2010.

The next store, no longer in existance, was the “A & P,” the “Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company,” a major chain grocery of the era. The next two buildings are also gone: its peaked roof projecting farther toward the street, the Kelley Fish Market, then Ray’s Restaurant. Finally the office of the R.J Peacock Company, fish packers still in business as of 2009. At the extreme right edge it is possible to make out the second story three-sided bay window marking the building just beyond School Street long housing the Lubec Post Office.
