Description

View of Chase Granite Quarry workers with items of sculptured granite. Several of the men are holding hand tools used for finishing stone. By the middle of the nineteenth century, granite quarries lined the hill above the northern shore of the harbor. At the Chase Quarry on Wood Point, cut stone was carried down to the wharf in cable cars. Blue Hill granite, said to ring like a bell when struck, was used in construction of large buildings and roads from Boston to New Orleans.
