Description

Hamilton Coal Company preceded Kennebec Coal & Lumber Supply at 78-80 Water Street. A large coal shed sat between the office and the shore of the Kennebec River. Builder's Supply occupied the site in the 1940s and 1950s and razed the coal shed to make room for storing lumber. The State of Maine purchased the site after Builder's Supply went out of business and the building was demolished. The State planned to purchase and tear down all the buildings on the east side of Water Street in order to widen Route 201. Stiff resistance by the citizens of Hallowell forced the State to abandon its plan. The State then swapped land with the City and the Old Hamilton Coal property is now home to a new riverside bulkhead and a partially completed public park.
