Description

Cpl. Herbert Windom, born in Pennsylvania in 1919, was part of a unit of Black soldiers assigned to guard railroad bridges that connected Maine and Canada during World War II. He stood in front of Blackstone's Store and Post Office on Route 9 and North Road in North Yarmouth.

The soldiers lived in box cars near the store.
