Description
Image of Portland Breakwater and Lighthouse (Bug Light) in South Portland, taken sometime between 1875 and 1889. A man is visible, standing next to the lighthouse door. The steamer ship "Tremont" travels by in the distance. The ship was owned and operated by the Portland Steam Packet Company, that had been started in 1844 by Maine businessmen to renew nightime steamship service between Boston and Portland. The company stayed in service until 1901.
