Description
This black-and-white photograph shows the City Hall site in 1927 before the demolition for the construction of the Charles Davenport Memorial City Hall. The collection of wooden buildings demonstrates the variety of residential, commercial, and adaptively-reused structures created in the evolving hodgepodge of a central business district. It is believed that one or more of these structures date from the early nineteenth-century when Benjamin Davenport of Massachusetts came to Bath, married Lucy Eames in 1804, and had both his hatting business and their home in a structure on Front Street at the head of Centre Street. When George P. Davenport died on December 29, 1926, his will provided money and this property, if a City Hall was constructed and named Davenport Memorial in the memory of his father Charles Davenport, the son of Benjamin Davenport. At the time of this photograph in September of 1927, the businesses about to lose their homes included Gibbons Coal, Colonial Cafe, Kennebec Fruit, and Gediman Brothers, a clothing store.
