Deed, Asa Palmer to Mercy Ledyard, Bath, 1809

Contributed by Patten Free Library

Description

This 1809 deed appears to describe the transfer of several parcels, including the property at the intersection of Centre and Water Streets where the 1850s Ledyard block stands and the water lot purchased by Palmer and Ledyard in 1806 from William King et al. Less than two months after his son Edward S. Palmer died without a will, Asa Palmer sold the property to his daughter Mercy Palmer Ledyard (1782-1817) for a single dollar "in consideration of my love and affection for my said Daughter." Her husband William Pitt Ledyard Jr. was Edward Palmer's business partner and would die three years after this deed was executed. Giving the property to Mercy would provide some economic security for the married woman. The presence of the Centre and Water Street lot suggests that the Palmer and Ledyard had joined the early nineteenth-century move to Shaw's Point, the site of the second central business district. It is this second site that would develop and grow into the current downtown.
