Howland & Donnell jewelry box, Bath, ca. 1870

Description

A box from merchants John T. Howland and Calvin C. Donnell, dealers in watches and jewelry, at 106 Front Street in Bath. This location was long occupied by jewelers, beginning in the late 1820s with John Hayden, followed by Howland and Donnell in 1863, Howland and Hayden (Charles F.) in the early 1870s, Charles Harriman in 1890, and Hall & Hunt after Harriman's death in 1933. In the 1960s the business changed to a children's clothing store.

In addition to the identifying label, there is a small shield-shaped sticker with an elaborate letter "H" on the box.
