Description

Looking approximately North North East, the bridge between Lubec and Campobello Island was quite new. A trailer, visible near the foot of the bridge initially housed U.S. Customs. This trailer was not yet in place in the aerial photo at 34067, taken in 1962. The small wooded domed island to the left is Pope’s Folly. Below the island, note the old water tank behind the Christian Temple Church. To the right, the Congregational Church steeple. Right and below the steeple note the large gabled Columbian Hall building (in 2009 a parking lot), and the adjacent flat-roofed Hilltop School (in 2009 site of the Lubec Town Hall).
The most prominent roadway on the left side is Main Street, meeting with Washington Street on the left edge forming Flatiron Corner. Corey's Garage (note numerous cars) occupied Flatiron Corner at that time. Later it became the McCurdy dealership owned by Arthur McCurdy, whose two-story home is to the right along Washington Strreet. As of 2009 this house is owned by the Medical Center. The large domed building near center bottom on South Street is the school gym, built in 1955, with the connected Elementary School, built in 1950. Move your eye above the gym across the open space and note the line of small dark-colored structures. These were some of the sardine workers’ housing, so common during the first half of the 20th Century.
This photograph is attributed to Carroll Peacock, a lifelong flyer, by his grandson, Robert J. Peacock II.
