Description

George Washington Pierce of Baldwin wrote to his parents, Josiah and Phebe Pierce, from Washington, D.C., reporting on his first meeting with President John Quincy Adams.

He reported that Adams looked haggard and was "almost a skeleton" and that Mrs. Adams looked ill as well. He wrote that Mrs. Adams reportedly "went into hystericks at the news of Jackson's election."

Andrew Jackson had just defeated Adams bid for a second term.

Pierce also discussed meeting Henry Clay and his favorable opinion of him.

Pierce planned to leave Washington in about a week to continue a westward journey looking for a suitable location to open his law practice.
